A Conversation with Murray Janoff
Don’t miss this revealing and fascinating story about the founding and early years of the USTWA as told to Paul Fein, USTWA board member and History Committee chair, by the last surviving founding father. Murray Janoff is now 95 years of age and was there in 1938 when the USTWA began. The purpose of this project was to document the founding and early years of the association, as well as Murray’s storied career and eventful life.
“I am the last survivor of the nine men who chartered the association in 1938. For about ten years prior to our founding, a man named James Pryor Allen, who was with the old New York Sun, had been trying to form the association. He was an elderly gentleman when I joined. The group was trying to get a charter in 1936 when I first started covering tennis professionally. That I know as a fact. Finally, in 1938, we got it chartered. And it was known then as the Lawn Tennis Writers Association of America.” Continue
